Cozy culinary experience in the 10th arrondissement of Paris

Gastronomy in Paris near Canal Saint Martin (10th arrondissement)

I was staying down in Bourgogne, in the wine village of Beaune a couple years ago, when someone mentioned Early June to me. I’ve been longing to eat here ever since. This past spring I was able to check it out. The owners are Victor Vaulter and Camille Machet, and the talented duo has already achieved cult status. The interior has a definite ethereal vibe. Rustic chic. It looks like the space was scraped and scrubbed to reveal the original building materials of days gone by; exposed brick, stone, and old beams. Instead of covering over everything for the build-out it looks like they took a different approach and decided to let the past emerge right through the walls. The schoolhouse tables and chairs are likely treasures from a local flea market; they are simple, but look super cool in the space.

Early June hosts different chefs from around the globe, so there’s always someone new in the kitchen. The menu is an ever-changing medley of 8-10 small plates, plus a dessert or two. Portion sizes are moderately generous. When I went with two friends, we ordered one of everything on the menu and shared. Prices per dish range from 8€ to 30€. They offer an eclectic wine list, including natural wines from the lesser known appellations. Glass pours are 8€ to 12€ and it is fun to try several different wines that pair with each dish. They also serve many delicious craft cocktails.

The restaurant only takes reservations for groups of 4 or more. You can make a reservation from their website. However, they do take walk-ins for groups less than 4. I have had good luck getting a table this way. Normally, when I really want to go somewhere that’s difficult to get into I go early in the week. They are closed Monday and Tuesday so Wednesday would be the best day to try to get a table. There are a few tables outside as well. When the weather is cooler and other people don’t want to sit outside, these tables can be a great option. Just be sure to dress warm. Rain or shine the food here is always outstanding.

  1. I love the name of this restaurant, simply because I was born in early June. 🙂
Dining with friends and ordering everything on the menu sounds like a lot of fun!
