Hidden Gem Mexican Fare for Foodies in Paris

Elevated Mexican fare in Paris (10th Arrondissement)

My Fall 2023 time in Paris was met with an abundance of new, fun, hip restaurants. Most of them were in the 10th, 11th, and 12th arrondissements. Surprisingly, it wasn’t hard to decide which one to write about first; I knew it was going to be Comer. Only open for about a year, the place itself has a massive Frida Kahlo vibe inside. The decor is simple, but classy and on point. The staff, including the chef/owner, are all extremely nice and super friendly. Chef’s name is Carlos and he is from Tabasco, Mexico. I did not know Tabasco was a place! Carlos is one of the most humble, down to earth people I’ve met. When things start out this good, you just know that the food, is going to be amazing. And it was! I started with the Betabel, Spanish for beetroot (betterave in French) which was a confit beet tostada with mango salsa. I love beets and this was definitely one of my favorite things I’d eaten in Paris this Fall. I then had the Horneado de Boeuf which was absolutely phenomenal. I am very particular about what I eat and where it’s sourced from. I rarely eat beef in restaurants for that reason. Pretty much never in the U.S. If a restaurant lists the place of sourcing on their menu it is usually an indication of a higher quality. When I saw that the beef was sourced from ferme de Clavisy I decided to order it. This ferme, or farm, is located in Noyers, just south of Chablis in Bourgogne and is known for its high quality products. The dish did not disappoint. Sitting on a bed of flavorful whipped white beans, pickled onion and scallions, the perfectly seasoned meat was tender and delicious. It was served with little warm corn tortillas. Their wine list is small but the offerings were carefully selected to pair with the food being served. I had the Chenin blanc and it was perfect. There are also vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. They are open for lunch Tuesday through Friday and dinner Wednesday through Friday. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

The only other thing I will say about this place, other than “go here when you’re in Paris” is that they have a 4.9 rating on Google. Sometimes Google ratings can be skewed but I find them to be pretty accurate most of the time. Many of the restaurants that I love and go to often typically have a rating of 4.3 to 4.6 stars. Even some of the very best ones (including some Michelin starred ones) don’t have more than 4.6. So for Comer to have a 4.9 is pretty impressive. The people got it 100% correct.
I give Comer 5 stars.
